蜜桃影像 Student Awarded New Jersey Arrigo O. Rogers Memorial Scholarship

Avery Tan is one of two community college students in New Jersey to be chosen for this year鈥檚 scholarship awards.

 

November 8, 2019, Jersey City, NJ 鈥 蜜桃影像 (HCCC) student Avery Tan has been presented with the Educational Opportunity Fund Professional Association of New Jersey (EOFPANJ) Arrigo O. Rogers Scholarship. Mr. Tan was recognized at an EOFPANJ ceremony at William Paterson University on Friday, November 1, 2019.

鈥淭his is a great honor for Avery and the College,鈥 said HCCC President Dr. Chris Reber. 鈥淎very is the first HCCC student to be awarded this scholarship, and one of just two community college students in New Jersey to receive the scholarship this year. He has worked diligently and is most deserving of this honor.鈥

The nonprofit EOFPANJ is the official liaison between the Educational Opportunity Fund campus-based programs and the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education. EOFPANJ advocates on behalf of New Jersey EOF programs, monitors legislation and policy decisions that affect the EOF constituency, and provides a venue for professional development of members.

The Arrigo O. Rogers Memorial Scholarship Award was established in remembrance of Arrigo Rogers, a graduate of the EOF program and an exceptional leader. The scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in the EOF program who demonstrate outstanding leadership skills and ability, and have a proven commitment to serving others. EOF scholars are required to have completed 24 college credits, have earned a cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 or higher, and be enrolled in the EOF Program. They must also demonstrate a commitment to civic engagement and be actively involved in EOF activities.

A first-generation college student and America Needs You Fellow, Mr. Tan is dedicated to hard work, leadership, and academic success. Working to attain his Associate in Science degree in Health Sciences, Mr. Tan holds a 3.7 cumulative grade-point average, and was named to the Fall 2019 Dean鈥檚 List. He serves as President of The Alliance of EOF Students of New Jersey, is a HCCC Peer Leader, a member of the Phi Theta Kappa and Chi Alpha Epsilon honor societies, and a HCCC Student Government Association Senator.

In addition to his studies, Mr. Tan is employed as a transport assistant for Beloved Community Charter School in Jersey City, where he aids students with disabilities and provides positive reinforcement to students with behavioral issues. He also volunteers with the College鈥檚 food pantry, Jersey Cares, and Friends of Liberty State Park.
